Greetings all -
Spoke with Jerry Talkington a bit ago; he'd stopped at Veteran's Memorial Park in Avon Lake and Avon Lake Powerplant this afternoon. There were scores of mergansers offshore Veteran's Memorial Park, but only about a dozen Common Goldeneye. Conditions for waterfowl were not optimal today as the lake was completely open and masses of birds were out along the horizon. At Avon Lake Powerplant, a single goldeneye was found near shore, but again, scores of waterfowl were seen out on the horizon, as the majority of the lake is open. Yesterday, there was still quite a bit of ice creating enormous leads, but the lake was not completely open. Winds have apparently pushed ice east, as there's a big buildup of solid ice just east at Rocky River. Fewer waterfowl and fewer gulls today. It's difficult to say what this weekend's storm (with strong NNW winds up to 35) will do along the lake. Winds have blown ice to shore at Avon Lake Powerplant, and there's very little water open immediately around the warm water outflow, yet the lake is open beyond a close-shore ice shelf. Same situation at Veteran's Memorial Park.
