Greetings -
On the 26th, Brian Zweibel and Laura Stiefel photographed a HOARY REDPOLL within a flock of Common Redpolls at private feeders in Sandusky County. Apparently the bird has made intermittent, brief visits to the same backyard feeders since Feb 20th. Brilliant photos taken by Brian, one of our top state photographers, and can be found on rarebird.org under the NW Ohio sighting forum. The bird appears very frosty white overall, particularly on the face, nape, and upperparts (mantle, wing coverts) and has a blunt-faced look with small bill, and a single fine streak on the undertail coverts. A single photo shows the rump fairly well and it appears to be quite white, another good mark. We're nearing the end of redpoll season, but there are still reports popping up around the state. White there was a small redpoll invasion, numbers didn't climax to, for example, the invasion of White-winged Crossbills of recent years past. Still, check redpoll flocks for the far more rare and northerly Hoary.

Meanwhile...
Hoary Redpoll is currently on Ohio's Review List. Check out: (http://www.ohiobirds.org/records/reviewlist.php).

The Ohio Rare Bird Committee looks forward to receiving documentation of all of our rare OH bird reports. Here's the documentation page, describing the how-to's and easy to download documents (word and pdf) for write-ups: (http://www.ohiobirds.org/records/documentation.php). Check out "about the committee", recent actions, and other cool stuff.
Sending in documentation for sightings of rare birds (Kirtland's Warbler, Black-necked Stilt, Mississippi Kite, etc. etc.) is an important (and dare I say fun) way to enrich the official Ohio ornithological record. In the meantime, the practice of writing up a rare bird (written, photographic, sketches) enhances our birding skills - particularly the depth of observation - in leaps and bounds.
With spring migration incoming there will undoubtably be a number of rarities reported around the state, likely in May during the height of the frenzy. (Looking forward to that). The OBRC absolutely welcomes documentation.
best of birding-Jen
