FEB. 06, 2011 - Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge Monthly Census.
TIME: 8:00am-12:00pm; 1:30pm-4:00pm TEMP.: 25-33
COND.: Cloudy, snow cover 4" to 18"; wind from south 10-15mph; all impoundments, ditches & lakes frozen. GROUPS: I: 2 persons; II: 4 persons. ROUTES: West side usual; east side morning route and entire afternoon route inaccessible due to lack of plowing; no access to Lake Erie. OBS.: Aaron Bartley, Ed Pierce, Jim Reyda, Al & Betty Schlecht (morning only), Douglas W. Vogus.

NOTE: The 2 Savannah Sparrows reported on the Christmas Bird Count in early January by D. Vogus are apparently holding steady. Birds were observed by A. Bartley, E. Pierce, J. Reyda & D. Vogus at the corners of Stange & Krause Rds. close to where previously reported near the prarie on Stange Rd. Birds were in the company of Amer. Tree Sparrows, Song Sparrows, Dark-eyed Junco's and 1 Swamp Sparrow along edges of said roads in the grit and grass where the county snowplows had cleared the roads.
   Also 2 dead Winter Wrens were found in the old phoebe nest on the porch of the old Ottawa N.W.R. headquarters, appeared to succumb to previous night's weather.
