Just got a call from Brad Sparks, who reported large numbers of
waterfowl seen from the Pickerington Ponds MP Wood Duck blind, including
seven greater white-fronted geese. It seems that deep water (reservoirs,
etc.) still retains ice under puddles of water, but shallower water such
as marshland could be quite productive. Large movements of sandhill
cranes have been reported to our south the last few days, and some will
surely pass through today, although they may be quite high up. Turkey
vultures are probably stale news by now; after all, there were more than
a thousand for the CBCs. Also keep an ear open for woodcawks,
remembering that nighthocks are scheduled for arrival in two months at
the earliest.
