I spent about two hours at Gallants Woods Preserve, off of Buttermilk Hill Road, just north of Delaware, on Friday night (3/11/11) enjoying the sounds of spring.  The specific goal of our program was to hear American Woodcock, which we did.  I flushed one along one of the tree lines around 5:00 p.m. and then at sunset our group began to hear and see what would eventually end up totaling 8-10 Woodcock in the field we were observing.  They put on a fantastic song and dance routine, as they always do.  In addition to the Woodcock, the Red-winged Blackbirds were back in full force, with a large number calling from the surrounding wetlands. Our group also heard one lone Wild Turkey call from about a half mile away.  On a non-bird note, we also heard Chorus Frogs and Spring Peepers. Spring is almost here!
