After a morning trip to John Pogacnik's in Lake County, for rewarding views about 11AM, of Common Redpolls, Pine Siskins, and the celebrity Hoary Redpoll; we returned to our home turf and checked out Pine Lake in eastern Mahoning County about 2PM. We were not disappointed! 10 species of waterfowl were found in good numbers, along with a remarkable amount of 135+ Horned Grebes, plus some other goodies! 5 additional waterfowl species were found four driving miles to the northwest, near the corner of Lynn Road and Bassinger Road, looking north into the flooded field. Pine Lake viewing can be accessed from SR7 on Lipply Road (Bald Eagle nest easily seen above the road), Harbour Lights Blvd thru new development, and from Pine Lake Road. The following is a list of the highlights: Greater White-fronted Goose ~ 3, Tundra Swan ~ 12 (Lynn Road), Wood Duck ~ 20+ (Lynn Road), Gadwall ~ 30+ (Lynn Road), American Wigeon ~ 40+, Northern Pintail ~ 150+ (Lynn Road), Green-winged Teal ~ 20+ (Lynn Road), Ring-necked Duck ~ 80+, Bufflehead ~ 10 males & 4 females, Hooded Merganser ~ 60+, Common Merganser ~ 16 males & 5 females, Red-breasted Merganser ~ 200+, Ruddy Duck ~ 40+, Pied-billed Grebe ~ 2, Horned Grebe ~ 135+, American Coot ~ 300+, and Herring Gull ~ 2. What a great birding day.
