I don't know how rare hoary redpolls are around here, but it's interesting
that John's bird was missing on 3/18 and this one appeared on Presque Isle
on 3/19.
Any possible connections here? There were at least 3 postings for 1-2
birds (each) on the PA listserve - and all 3 sightings in western PA - in Jan,
Feb, and Mar 2. But I don't remember anything posted past Mar 2.

Subj: [PABIRDS] Hoary Redpoll at head of Presque Isle Bay
Mike Weible found a Hoary Redpoll with 17 Common Redpolls at the foot of
Sommerheim Drive. The Hoary Redpoll and the Common Redpolls were nearly at
his feet feeding on the lawn near the Purple Martin houses before I
arrived. I saw the bird and photogrpahed it, but not at close range in the open.
The entire time I was there, they were either on the ground in a brushy
area or in the trees.
