I had a chance to work the lakefront from Conneaut heading west to Fairport
Harbor. There was varying numbers of waterfowl depending on location.
There were few dabblers. The lake off Ashtabula County still had a lot of
ice, but the harbors were partly open.

At Conneaut there were about 400 waterfowl, mostly scaup (both species), but
some redheads, ring-necked ducks, hooded and red-breasted mergansers. The
only ducks of note were 2 male LONG-TAILED DUCKS. There were a couple
hundred gulls on the mudflat. Most were herring and ring-billed.

At Lakeshore Park in Ashtabula the lake here was about 70% ice-covered.
There were about 300 ducks with red-breasted mergansers being most numerous.
There were also canvasback, scaup, bufflehead, goldeneye, and ruddy ducks.
Of note was a male SURF SCOTER. Lot of gulls, but just the common species.

On the west side of the river looking over the harbor from the museum I was
able to spot a ROSS'S GULL with some Canada geese in the open area east of
the river.

At Walnut Beach there were several vultures passing by. As I was starting
to leave a BLACK VULTURE was seen amongst them heading east. I tried
following the road east to get a photo, but could not relocate it.

At Geneva State Park the were only a few geese. I did find a red-headed
woodpecker here.

At Fairport Harbor there was about 800 waterfowl in the harbor. Most were
scaup and red-breasted mergansers, but I saw numerous canvasback, redhead,
common goldeneye, and bufflehead. The only duck of note was a female
WHITE-WINGED SCOTER.
