On a quick run through of several parks along Walnut Creek (southeast of Columbus) in this far suburb, I had a good raptor afternoon including a Great Horned Owl sitting on a nest. The nest is the obvious large old stick nest along the woodlot margin northwest of the parking area for Bareis Nature Preserve. You can reach this preserve by turning at the Canal Winchester Middle School entrance off Lithopolis Rd and drive past the middle school to the gravel parking lot. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately), the view is not optimal, since the nest is fairly high and there is no clear view of the top. All I could see from several viewpoints was a tail and 2 ear tufts.

Other raptors here and at nearby Miller Park included Turkey Vultures, a displaying male Cooper's Hawk, pairs of Red-tails, and a Kestrel.

Other birds in the vicinity included a few Kildeer, lots of Robins, and small flocks of Tree, Field, and Song Sparrows, as well as the expected edge birds.
