Greetings all -
A birding trip today scoured the lakefront from Avon Lake Powerplant east to Kenneth J. Sim's Park in Euclid. HIGHLIGHTS included a nearly full-breeding plumaged EARED GREBE at Gordon Park Boat Ramp (immediately east of East 72nd street, and just east of the Dike 14 entrance), two male SURF SCOTERS and a single female BLACK SCOTER at Sim's Park, and a stunning adult GLAUCOUS GULL at East 72nd and Gordon Park. A single stunning CASPIAN TERN flew by Rocky River Park around 10:30 a.m., heading east.
Red-breasted Mergansers numbered in the thousands on the lake today, with massive congregations off of East 55th and East 72nd. Waterfowl were in great supply overall, particularly at Wendy Park/Whiskey Island, where Lesser Scaup, Ruddy Duck, Redhead, Ring-necked Duck, mergansers, Bufflehead, and Horned Grebes were seen brilliantly well. The small marina at Gordon Park was simply loaded. Wood Duck, Gadwall, Hooded and Common and Red-breasted Mergansers, Bufflehead, American Coot, and more were packed in. We had simultaneous views of the Eared, plus up to 10 Horned Grebes and two Pied-billed Grebes here.
The scoters at Sim's Park were off to the east, near the company of Red-breasted Mergansers and a handful of Common Goldeneye. Handfuls of Bonaparte's Gulls are moving along the lake, at most locations, as well. A few Great Black-backed Gulls were seen at Wendy Park, and a single Lesser Black-backed Gull was off of East 72nd.
Photos of the Eared Grebe will appear soon. The bird was originally found by Irene Krise as a "look at THIS bird." Definitely the bird of the day. Meanwhile Sandy Brown just kept shouting out "there's that Glaucous Gull again." A fantastic day in the field shared by all.
best of birding - Jen
