I would be grateful to hear from anyone who has a good record of ANY
species of tern in Ohio prior to 3 March. I believe the origin of this
bird (I feel sure it was a royal tern, but the decision lies with the
records committee who will have all the information) is the Gulf coast.
The violent storms we experienced about the first of the month (many
people noticed coatings of dust, which were said to have originated in
Texas) probably caught up this bird--and who knows how many others?--
and landed it here in our cold and inhospitable clime. Not all that
different from our only sooty tern, that Hurricane Dennis brought us in
July of 2005.
