We finally had great views of the wagtail ,but paid for it .By the time we got back to the van it felt as though someone took a sledge hammer to our bodies. We started with a 1 1/2 mi walk out before deciding we were going the wrong way. We went back to the car to find 2 others who were going to look for the bird and they told us we were on the right road,so back out we went. The other 2 had bicycles and then I knew this was not going to be fun. The winds were a steady 40 mph with gusts I'm guessing to be close to 60. I first found the bird in the SE corner of Vermet around 11 A.M. but it just vanished only to found several hrs. later in Cell 3. I sat on the ground to view the bird well through the scope. After 6 hrs. battling the wind I thought this the best way to see it.
I thought I was in pretty good shape but now I have taken another look and I'm not sure. I offer some advice. Walking at a moderate pace with a scope takes approx.1hr. This is not a walk for those in bad shape as this road never seems to end. If you can, take a bicycle or better yet a Hoveround.. I would never go out there again with out one. Nine of us were out there and 3 had a bike. Not all 9 saw the bird as 3 decided enough was enough and left. Also take water out with you. Oh, I forgot it was a 3+ hour drive. The ride home was pleasant as we did have excellent views of the bird.
