Well, it seems like Cleveland's west side is having an influx of Purple Finches.  After seeing Paula Lozano and Craig Caldwell's postings, I decided to post mine.  After a winter of backyard birding that has just been dull, dull, dull, one FOY male PF (no females) showed up in our back yard in Rocky River yesterday (Monday) and today feeding on the ground.  This is our first backyard PF in close to 30 years.  They used to be regular guests at our feeders before then, until the House Finches moved in and took their place.

Just an open question to anyone out there who might know.  When the House Finches arrived in this area (late 70's I think), did they take up the ecological niche previously occupied by the Purple Finches, or are there other reasons for the Purples' decline?

Also, two FOY Fox Sparrows in backyard yesterday, but not today so far.
