Greetings from Slate Run!

The Slate Run Metro Park birdathon team made up of myself, Linda Benner, Lori Patterson, and Randy Rogers saw 100 species of birds throughout the park on Saturday!  The weather was great and the birds were great too.  Good finds included the following:

*  3 black-billed cuckoos together in the Buzzard's Roost Picnic Area, plus a yellow-billed in the area as well.

* Eye-level views of a cerulean warbler on the Sugar Maple Trail.

* Winter wren along the trail in the wetland!  It was near the bench on the south side of the trail.

* A ruddy duck in the wetland as well, best seen from the "overlook deck" on top of the wetland.

* Henslow's and grasshopper sparrows are back in the grassland along with lots of meadowlarks.

* One broad-winged hawk flying and diving into the woods along Duvall Road.

Three of us finished our day by going over to OSU and looking at the Kirtland's Warbler around 6:30 p.m.  It was still seen at 960 Kinnear Road and across the street as well.  3 cars pulled in and asked us what was going on, so it was fun to share our excitement over one tiny bird!  I hope others seize this interpretive/educational moment as well!

If you want more information about Slate Run Metro Park, go to http://www.metroparks.net and find Slate Run under the "parks" section.
I hope the birding continues to be good for those of you planning to come out and visit!
