While leaving downtown Columbus yesterday afternoon, I stopped briefly at one of the few areas with large trees, the state capitol grounds. Migrants were not as abundant here as at other locations in Columbus (see other posts for 5-01), but there was a very cooperative WhipPoorWill sitting on a low branch on a tree on the NE side of the grounds. It would have been better concealed if not for the scolding it was getting from an Orchard Oriole! Other migrants on the grounds included a few Catbirds, a Redstart (hopping through a flower bed), a Black&White warbler, and a flock of 25+ White-throated sparrows around the hedges of the capitol.
