Brad Sparks and I did some surveying at the new wetlands along Darby
Creek Dr., finding that migration is far from over. Our finds there:
99 semipalmated sandpipers
1 least sandpiper only
2 white-rumped sandpipers
1 ruddy turnstone
6 spotted sandpipers
30+ killdeers
4 semipalmated plovers
1 lesser yellowlegs
*2 black-necked stilts, M&F
Later, nearby at Bolton Field Brad spotted one of the upland sandpipers.
* these were in the southmost roadside pond in the wetlands, within
fifty yards of the road, but left before we moved on, and flew deeper
into the wetlands, I feel pretty sure.
There is no safe legal pulloff along this busy highway, either. A
decent view of this part of the wetlands can be had by taking the trail
from the park HQ just a bit farther south that goes north to the bison
herd; it parallels the road a bit farther west; there are no trees, etc.
in the way, and is quite safe, even from the bisons.
