Hey Lyn, and all.

If you ever have a need to listen to more than one way for a bird to
sing...go here:

http://macaulaylibrary.org/index.do

You will find that there is no one way. :-D

For a general song that is about as normal as you are going to get, just
look the bird up on Cornell...Macaulay's home site. :

http://www.allaboutbirds.org

The ID songs that they put there are "general" songs. You will find
that Cornell's song, is a compilation, so there will sometimes be both
"Hey look at my nest!" calls as well as "Marco...Polo" calls, and "get
away from me or I'll poke your eyes out" calls as well. :-D

I find that the sounds on Macaulay are closer to what you will hear, you
just have to get the right one. :-D For example. The recording of a
Blackburnian Warbler on Cornell is not as...raspy, as the ones that I
found on Macaulay. But the ones in the "field" sounded like the raspier
ones found on Macaulay. I think that Cornell digitally enhanced them in
some way.

Having said that, the ones that Cornell uses for Vireo's seem to be what
I hear in the field...however, they compile the "Hi I'm a Warbling
Vireo" call with the "Get off my property!" call...so you need to be a
bit discerning in what you are hearing.

So I would go to Cornell first, then if it sounds a bit different, then
try Macaulay.

Regarding the Tanager, I wouldn't get hung up on pregnant pauses...it
could have gotten interrupted by a bug in the throat or something when
you heard it, or when it was recorded...I know I always have to spit it
out before I can finish a thought. :-D

Y'all have a great day, I'm going Birding!

Steve
