Hello Birders,

This afternoon (Wednesday June 15) I found a Glaucous Gull on the east beach, aka Wildlife Beach, at Magee Marsh Wildlife Area in n.w. Ohio. When I first saw it I assumed it would turn out to be something like a leucistic Herring Gull, but a closer look showed it to be a typical one-year-old Glaucous. I had actually gone out to the east beach to look for insects so I wasn't set up for bird photography, but I managed a couple of diagnostic photos. The bird was still there when I left at 3:45.

Small numbers of Glaucous Gulls are regular on Lake Erie in winter, of course. Anomalous summer records of young Glaucous Gulls south of their Arctic breeding grounds are not too unusual elsewhere -- there are even midsummer records for Florida -- but there don't seem to be many previous summer records for Ohio.
