I spent the morning of the holiday birding along the Scioto River in downtown Columbus from Grandview area south to Scioto MetroPark. There was nothing extraordinary, but there was good diversity for July in such an urban location. Notables included:

Cormorants - singles feeding around both Long St dam and Greenlawn dam, likely commuters from the Shrum Mound Quarry colony

Great Egret - 1 was hunting in the bay at Scioto MetroPark

Cooper's Hawks - once again, they've nested successfully at Wyman Woods in Grandview, with 2 large fledgelings calling noisily there.

Shorebirds - Kildeer were expected, and found, but 4 Spotted Sandpipers in the bay at Scioto MetroPark were unexpected.

Yellow-throated Warblers - unusual for this location, 2 were singing along the bikepath in Berliner Park in good habitat.

Prothonotary Warbler- 1 was singing in the riparian woods of Berliner Park, below the Greenlawn dam

Orchard Orioles - 2 males were singing in the fields north of the Grange Center at Scioto MetroPark, unusual for this location.
