Greetings all -
The TWO adult PIPING PLOVERS found by Emil Bacik in the late afternoon today (Wed) were still present at least as of 7:45 p.m. if not later. Both birds have bands. Many photos were taken - some of which may be able to distinguish - via bands - from which breeding populations these stellar birds originated. There is a SLIGHT chance that these birds may be present in the very early a.m. or perhaps (but unlikely) through the mid-morning hours tomorrow (Thurs), so if you're considering "chasing" this pair, you likely have a very slim window. It is very rare that migrant shorebirds stick around for extended periods of time. There is typically high turnover on these lakefront mudflat locations - with some birds dropping in for only a few hours, and sometimes (i.e. Whimbrel) often only minutes. Example: last Saturday's American Avocet was present at Lorain for 9 hours, but the 15 Willets were present for only 4 hours. The "drop-in" effect at Lorain is very intriguing and can be exciting. Also present at the impoundment mudflats this afternoon/evening included: (20) Least Sandpipers, (5) Lesser Yellowegs, (3) Dunlin, (1) Short-billed Dowitcher, (1) Semipalmated Sandpiper, (6) Spotted Sandpipers, (35+) Killdeer, (5) Ruddy Ducks, (6) Common Moorhens, and all regular species of swallows including martin and Cliff Swallow.
Photos of the plovers will be posted later at: http://www.jenbrumfield.com/?page_id=384

best of birding - Jen
