I checked the Confluence and Borrow Pits areas of 3-Creeks, as well as several quarry and wetland areas in nearby Groveport this morning. Recent rains have kept water levels very high, so shorebirds were AWOL. Still lots of singing landbirds for such a late date; enjoyable when they could be heard over the cicadas. Highlights included

Great Egrets - small #s scattered over several shallow ponds around Groveport; easiest were 3 in the flooded fields along Old Hamilton Rd south of Bixby.

Cooper's Hawks - begging juveniles around the Hendron Center, where they've nested for many years.

Pileated Woodpeckers - 4+ calling birds along the riparian forests of Big Walnut & Blacklick Creeks

Flycatchers - still plenty of calling Pewees, Acadian, & Great Crested in riparian strips

Vireos - strangely quiet, with only a few Red-eyed at Confluence

Grackles - the first big flocks of late summer, at several places. Largest was 250 birds flying up-creek over Groveport Rd near Alum Creek Drive

Orioles - calling Baltimores at several places. As an early migrant, these birds may already be southbound migrants.
