I went over to the southwest end of Berlin Res. in Stark Co. this morning to check out the shorebird habitat there.  Mudflats are looking good and will likely get even better over the next couple weeks.  As Bob Lane described in a recent post, park at the gravel area beside the blue bridge over the Mahoning River channel along Greenbower St. (just west of State Rte. 225) and hike north from there.  I trekked up both the east and west shorelines and found the following birds: 5 wood ducks, 7 blue-winged teal, double-crested cormorants, 15+ great blue herons, 9 great egrets, osprey, imm. bald eagle, red-shouldered hawk, killdeers, 7 semipalmated plovers, spotted sandpiper, 2 solitary sandpipers, 9 lesser yellowlegs, 5 semipalmated sandpipers, 10 least sandpipers, ring-billed gulls, chimney swifts, belted kingfisher, pileated woodpecker, 4 warbling vireos, barn swallows, and e. bluebird.  As the water level drops at Berlin, the freshest mudflats will
advance north towards the Price St. bridge and then the Rte. 225 bridge.  It takes some time, effort, and a scope to bird this site well; but it is often quite rewarding.  On the way back home I checked a wetland/construction site along State Rte. 46 in Beaver Twp. in Mahoning Co.  It is directly across the road from the new South Range Schools complex.  The slough held killdeers, solitary sandpiper, 2 lesser yellowlegs, and 2 least sandpipers.  Very nice to see another bit of stopover habitat for shorebirds in Ohio!  Craig Holt, Lowellville
