Tonight from 6PM to 7PM, we visited the Greenbower Road area on the southwest corner of Berlin Reservoir, in extreme northeast Stark County. The Corps of Engineers are presently beginning to lower the lake level, thus, exposed mudflats are now visible along Greenbower Road (T-12) just west of SR225. Nothing out of the ordinary was present, but there were shorebirds; the following is a list of some of the birds we saw and how many: Green Heron 9+, Osprey 2, Killdeer 20+, Greater Yellowlegs 2, Lesser Yellowlegs 15+, Solitary Sandpiper 22+, Spotted Sandpiper 6, Least Sandpiper 10+, Pectoral Sandpiper 4, and Caspian Tern 2. Hopefully in the next few weeks as the water level continues to drop, the historical shorebird areas at Price Road and the SR225 Bridge will become the productive hotspots they have been in the past when the water level is right with shorebird migration. September should be good! Berlin Lake Wildlife Area (8,518 acres in parts of Stark, Mahoning, and Portage Counties), is definitely the land of the Osprey. This past summer had at least six active nests producing young. Love those shorebirds. Bob and Denise Lane / Mahoning County
