I took a walk along the dike at Wright Marsh last evening and was surprised to find a Lesser Scaup in eclipse plumage in a small open area of water along the dike a couple of hundred yards from the railroad tracks. The scaup is currently flightless. It looks to me to be an adult male.
There is a large area of exposed mud and a good number of shorebirds were scattered about. I could only detect five common species: Pectoral, Solitary, Spotted, and Least Sandpipers, and Lesser Yellowlegs (listed in decreasing order of abundance). The site looks promising and might be worth a regular check.
Excellent views of Prothonotary and Yellow Warblers, calling Willow Flycatchers, Pied-billed Grebe and moorhen families, and an absence of mosquitoes made for an enjoyable evening.
Gabe Hostetler,
