Conneaut was pretty lousy for shorebirds yesterday although the longish-staying juv. Am. avocet was still there.  It's been present since 8/9 I think.  Lots of great views of the bird feeding in various ways, in flight, etc.  The water level was down on the spit more than any day yet this year, so finally the pond/pool at the east end was taking shape.  The very strong winds yesterday probably had a role in that, as well as influencing bird movements.  Also seen at Conneaut 8/22: 2 wood ducks, n. shoveler, 25 double-crested cormorants, 2 green herons, 2 juv. black-crowned night-herons, osprey, bald eagles, lesser yellowlegs, semipalmated & least sandpipers, 2 Bonaparte's gulls, a second-cycle lesser black-backed gull, Caspian terns, and belted kingfisher.  I stopped by Mosquito L. in Trumbull Co. on the way home.  I checked the bay on the NW shore from Hoagland-Blackstub Rd. (just north of Mahan-Denman Rd.) and the first mudflats are appearing
there.  Birds included: wood ducks, green-winged teal, great blue herons, 5 great egrets, osprey, bald eagle, 4 solitary sandpipers, 5 lesser yellowlegs, e. wood-pewee, e. phoebe, and 4 Baltimore orioles.  It's good to see shorebird habitat appearing now at Mosquito L. and Berlin L. in NE Ohio, as these are quality stopover sites.  Craig Holt, Lowellville
