The patchy woods along Huron Pier this morning were occupied by hundreds of warblers - the best such fall movement that Emil Bacik or I have witnessed in years. Here's the complete list:
Tennessee 2
Orange-crowned 1
Nashville 10
N Parula 1
Yellow 5
Chestnut-sided 6
Magnolia 120
Cape May 2
Black-throated Blue 2
Black-throated Green 3
Blackburnian 6
Pine 1
Bay-breasted 40
Blackpoll 20
Black-and-white 3
Redstart 30
Ovenbird 2
Mourning 5
C Yellowthroat 2
Wilson's 40
Canada 2
The numbers of Bay-breasted were most impressive, as were the five Mournings. Eight Philadelphia Vireos and 10 Yellow-bellied Flycatchers were among the other passerine high counts.
A WHIMBREL passed over the impoundment calling and assumedly put down on the western breakwall, as it was heard twice more briefly later in the morning. An Olive-sided Flycatcher was also a surprise flyby. 164 total Common Terns passed in groups headed west, and 15 Bobolinks were also tallied.
At Lorain's Lakeview Park, the number of Bonaparte's Gulls continues to grow with over 300 present today. Regular coverage here in the coming weeks could turn up Little Gull, Sabine's Gull, or Black-legged Kittiwake.
And, while I AM NOT encouraging tresspassing at Lorain, there was no work going on today and there were a few shorebirds present including White-rumped Sandpiper (2), Sanderling, and a Buff-breasted Sandpiper which buzzed the area several times, never landed, then headed west.
We totaled 92 species for the day.
Good birding -
