The male Ring-necked Duck I previously reported on August 24th, is still present at the pond adjacent to the Ohio River and opposite the intersection of Bell's Run Road (C-46) and SR7. When I first saw this bird on August 15th, it was difficult to readily identify, because it was in what I believe to be, some stage of moulting plumage. Since that first sighting, it has made a miraculous transformation into adult male Ring-necked Duck plumage. There is no problem with identification now. I have no idea how long the Ring-necked Duck had been there prior to the August 15th date. For the past two weeks it has had a Pied-billed Grebe as a constant companion. According to the Ohio Records Committee checklist, Ring-necked Duck is not shown during any of this time period! To reach the pond location, go 10.5 miles upstream along SR7 from the intersection of I-77 at Marietta, or 4.5 miles downstream from the town of Newport.
