This morning, myself, plus Ryan Golterman, visited the area between Greenbower Road and Price Street in extreme northeast Stark County, from 9:15AM to about noon. We recorded about 38 species of birds, with the highlight being an American Golden-Plover in transitional breeding to non-breeding plumage (some mottled black on the chest). The southwestern portion of Berlin continues to recede toward Price Street and the SR225 Bridge, with more and more sand bars and mudflats becoming available. Some of the other birds of interest were: Great Egret 14+, Semipalmated Plover 55+, Killdeer 60+, Greater Yellowlegs 5, Spotted Sandpiper 4, Semipalmated Sandpiper 20+, Least Sandpiper 50+, Pectoral Sandpiper 25+, Caspian Tern 1, Yellow-billed Cuckoo 1, Yellow Warbler 1, Magnolia Warbler 1, American Redstart 1, and Hooded Warbler 1. Access is improving as the water level goes down, with some effort required presently. Present access options are: from the west side of the bridge on Greenbower, west of SR225, walk north (to the right) along the west bank of the Mahoning River, bushwhacking left, then right around the willows till you see the expanse of mudflats. Option #2 is to park at the lot on Price Street, also west of SR225, and walk south along the west shore to the corner looking at the mudflats from the other direction. A spotting scope is necessary. Bob Lane / Mahoning County
