The Kokosing Gap Trail runs for 13 miles between Mount Vernon and Danville
in Knox County. My favorite birding spot on the trail is at the Brown
Family Environment Center (BFEC) which lies just outside of Gambier on
Laymon Rd. This location provides a healthy mix of habitat. Here you will
find open fields, coniferous plantings, deciduous woods, riparian woods, and
plenty of edge; along with the impressive gardens and prairie grasses
that are planted at the BFEC. The entire trail provides good birding, but
I've found this location to be very productive year-round.

While birding the BFEC this morning I saw a nice variety of birds. There
were 9 species of warblers present:

American Redstart
Northern Parula
Ovenbird
Hooded Warbler
Common Yellowthroat
Kentucky Warbler
Black-throated Green Warbler
Blackpoll Warbler
Magnolia Warbler

There were multiple redstarts, yellowthroats, and magnolias. The rest were
singles. A single Swainson's Thrush was also seen.
