My wife Karen and I walked the mowed trail around the pond north of the
grain bins this morning. At the south end of the pond, a large flock of
coots had a few N. pintails and one mallard couple mixed in when we
arrived. Strangely, no Canada geese at all today. Except for a few
peeps along the east bank, the shorebirds were at the north/northwest
end of the pond, and included 6 or so least sandpipers, 2-3 juvenile
pectoral and 1 juvenile stilt sandpipers, a dunlin, and a dozen or so
killdeer. Savannah sparrows, red-winged blackbirds, and Eastern
meadowlarks were in the weeds, especially on the north and west sides.
Raptors seen were a N. harrier hunting north of the pond, an adult bald
eagle perched in a dead tree a few hundred yards northeast of the pond,
and a juvenile red-tailed hawk on a utility pole along Darby Creek Drive.
