Hello Ohio birders,

Lorain County in northern Ohio needs your help.

The Elyria Christmas Bird Count will take place on Saturday, December 17. For details call Jack Smith 440-322-0820. This count circle includes Lake Erie, Bacon Woods, Carlisle Rsvn, Lorain County Regional Airport and Black River Rsvn.

The Wellington Christmas Bird Count will be on Wednesday, December 28. We meet at the McDonalds in Wellington on Route 58 at 7:30 am. For details contact Tom Reed 440-647-4088, [log in to unmask] or Bob MacGillis at 440-653-6629, [log in to unmask] This count includes Wellington Reservation, Caley Rsvn, and Findley State Park.

All participants, beginning or potential birders can join experienced birders by either driving or walking at selected sites. EXPERIENCE is not necessary. Any amount of time is appreciated, from an hour or two to all day.

Christmas Bird Count details and sign up sheets will be available at the next Black River Audubon Society meeting on December 6 at 7 pm at Sandy Ridge Reservation, JWC Perry F. Wetland Center, 6195 Otten Road, North Ridgeville.

This meeting is in cooperation with the Lorain County Metro Parks featuring speaker Jim McCormac, author of Birds of Ohio. His program, Ruby-throated Hummingbirds: Feathered Helicopters, will take you on a journey into the complex world of Ohio's only breeding hummingbird. “These feathered dynamos are true marvels of nature and a joy to observe,” McCormac explained. “Their life cycle involves tree bark, lichens, spiders, myriad flowering plants, and tropical winters very different than Ohio.”

Thank you,
Terri Martincic
