Greetings all-
The Red Phalarope is still present off the lighthouse at Headlands Beach State Park as of 1 pm Tuesday the 1st.
WARNING: In order to view the phalarope, birders must CAREFULLY walk the entire length of the breakwall out to the lighthouse, then walk AROUND the lighthouse to the left on flat rock pilings. The phalarope has been hanging out against the breakwall on the northeast side of the lighthouse. Once you walk around the lighthouse, head to the right (east). The bird has been feeding at five feet away at the base of the pilings.
The break wall is accessible but there are serious safety issues, with some large gaps between boulders and uneven surfaces on the rocks all along the way.
Some folks have arrived to realize that they cannot make the walk safely. Others have walked the breakwall noting that it is hair-raising but slowly and surely they worked their way out. I would NOT advise carrying a scope or huge camera equipment out there, for your own safety.
