Yesterday we had a beautiful calm lake and while out I heard many small
passerines passing overhead and saw a large group of probably 500 blackbirds
pass over the lake near South Bass Island. There were a number of Common
Loons seen from the Scheeff East Point Nature Preserve.
Today with the northeast wind, there were common loons, horned grebe,red-
breasted mergansers, bufflehead, and many double-crested cormorants seen
from Middle Bass Island. Mallards, wood ducks, and a great blue heron in
protected locations. We have seen few waterfowl yet this year so the change
in the weather is bringing the birds.
While walking on Middle Bass, I saw many flocks of dark-eyed juncoes
everywhere-one as many as 100 birds in one spot. There were a number of
swamp, song, savannah sparrows, as well as at least one tree sparrow. I was
surprised to see an eastern phoebe pumping its tail near one of the flocks
of juncoes today. Also saw yellow-rumped warblers, ruby-crowned kinglets,
and a pair of Carolina wrens at the Middle Bass Island East Point Preserve.
A surprise from Monday morning were two woodcocks seen on South Bass just
before dawn not far from the airport. Not usually seen this time of year!
