Milton wrote Paradise Lost with an underlying meaning. Although it is mainly a religious tale, dealing
with devils and angels, it also correlates with the life of Milton personally and publicly. An aspect of
his life was lost when he became blind. Also he suffered great losses with the death of his wives and
of his son. These losses must have greatly affected Milton and spurred him to write Paradise Lost.
The public reason for which this poem was written was the religious separation that was occurring at
the time. There were disagreements between Protestants and Catholics and the struggle between
them can be seen in the poem.
