Many thanks to the person who described Hooded mergansers at Twin Lakes.
I went there today (sunday) from around noon to 3 pm. I saw a few Hooded
mergansers, a few bufflehead, a red necked grebe, a common loon, a ring
necked duck, and some Mallards and geese. Not to mention 3 red-shouldered
hawks, one of which posed for me while eating so I could practice
digiscoping!
I then went to Burke where I also saw at least two short eared owls. No
doubt about it with the spotting scope. They were on the far (north) side
of the runway so hard to see much detail without a scope. Also a kestrel
posed on a street light near me giving me some very clear looks.
