Just a follow-up from yesterday's post:

Got some interesting replies on my expression of surprise to see RHWP so "late" -- late for Wayne County, I thought.

For the past 5 years, we've kept close records of our property birds, and have seen them arrive in spring, and promptly skeedaddle in the late summer, after breeding; almost always 1-2 young; they enjoy suet the whole time they are with us.

I always assumed that meant this species observed a "micromigration" in this part of the state, drifting south for the colder months;

We feed suet all year long, so I assumed that they were NOT moving due to lack of food -- they come to our feeders the whole time they are here to breed.

Apparently, since we have almost no oak in our little patch of woods, they are using it solely as a nursery for breeding, but don't "go south" as I assumed -- just "out" to where their preferred winter grounds are, perhaps where the acorn supply is more robust.

Love to see these birds, and now that I know they are around, I'll have to keep an eye out for them in the off-season!
