Please join us on Tuesday January 24 when Gwen Myers, DVM of the Columbus
Zoo and Aquarium will share her experiences using satellite telemetry to
analyze the movement, distribution, and habitat of the Spectacled Eiders in
Alaska. This is critical information for the management and conservation of
the species.
Spectacled Eiders are a medium-sized sea duck that nest in Russia and
Alaska. They are one of the most challenging species to study due to their
harsh habitat - they live in some of the most remote and extreme
environments on earth. Between 1952 and 1993, the Spectacled Eider Alaska
population declined 96%.
Dr. Gwen Myers is the Associate Veterinarian for the Columbus Zoo and
Aquarium and has a passion for conservation research and fieldwork. She
serves as a Volunteer Veterinarian for the United States Geological Survey
in Alaska, and over the last seven years has participated in fieldwork
projects there. The past three years she has spent time in the Arctic Circle
working to help protect the Spectacled Eiders. She is an Adjunct Professor
at the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine and a guest
lecturer for the College's Preventative Medicine program. She teaches the
Zoo & Wildlife elective at the veterinary school, and is a frequent
presenter at the annual American Association of Zoo Veterinarians
conference. She also works part-time at MedVet's Medical & Cancer Center for
Pets as an emergency doctor.
Tuesday's Columbus Audubon "Short Program" features Earl Harrison, co-chair
for Columbus Audubon field trips. Earl will discuss winter raptors and owls
at the Killdeer Plains Wildlife Area.

7:30 - 9:00 pm: Main program
