Stopped at Piedmont Dam in Harrison Co. on the way to see the common ravens in Jefferson Co. There is a lot of open water. The following were viewed either from the dam itself, or from Belmont Ridge Road (the road that winds around the reservoir after crossing the dam).

Canada goose - @500 (spent a LOT of time scanning for snow, white-fronted or cackling. NADA!)
mallard - 34
black ducks - 20 or 30
canvasback - 1
hooded merganser 12
American coot - 5
red-tailed hawk - 1
American kestrel (not at lake - total of 4 seen)
tufted titmouse - 3
white-breasted nuthatch - 1
downy woodpecker - 2
red-bellied woodpecker - 1

On the return trip, I came home a different route, so that I could check Tappan Lake, also in Harrison Co. Don't bother. Most of the lake is frozen over (the eastern part) and the only birds that might be considered "water" were a few ring-billed gulls. Even the deeper western end of the reservoir was void of birds.

However, at series of gravel pits along State Route 36 in Tuscarawas Co. I saw what must have been 2000 geese. Some landed where I could not scope them, so I have no idea whether there were any unusual ones among the crowd. Of those I could see, all were Canadas. (I did have several kind folks stop to ask if I was having car trouble!)

Great day for birding!
