After locating the perched great horned owl along Licking Trails Road north of the Dutch Fork Wetlands area of Dawes Arboretum, I had time to kill before beginning the Project FeederWatch for which I volunteer there.
Dawes Lake was FULL of geese - maybe 500 or so. Unfortunately, I didn't bring my spotting scope. Anyway, I saw what at first I thought was a mallard climb out of the water and onto the ice. Then I saw that it wasn't a duck, but a (white-cheeked) goose. It was substantially smaller than the other Canadas, but I'm not ready to pronounce it a cackling because I was not close enough to see its bill well.
Moral of the story: Bring the spotting scope, no matter what!
Also present, around 20 mallards and a single American coot.
