JANUARY 07, 2012 - Cuyahoga Valley National Park & Metro Parks, Serving Summit County Monthly Towpath Trail Census.
HIKE: Red Lock south to Merriman Rd. TIME: 7:55am-2:50pm TEMP.: 27-48-46 COND.: Crisp early, mostly cloudy; warming throughout & mostly sunny until 12:30pm; sunny, no clouds from 12:30pm-2:50pm; light west winds. 
FT.MI.: 13.0 OBS.: Douglas W. Vogus, Michelle Zager (from Botzum Trailhead to Merriman Rd.)
I. MAMMALS: 5 SPECIES.
1. Eastern Gray Squirrel - 5
2. Eastern Fox Squirrel - 14 (2 chasing each other to top of tree & both fell 30 ft. into Cuyahoga River. Both made it back to dry land)
3. Red Squirrel - 20
4. Muskrat - 1
5. White-tailed Deer - 17 (8-pt. buck, 16 doe)
II. BIRDS: 42 SPECIES, plus 1 ESCAPE/EXOTIC.
(NOTE: ? = bird was seen but not sexed; * = bird was heard calling but not sexed)

E. Greylag/Barnyard/Domestic/Feral Goose - 1
2. American Black Duck - 7 (4m,3f)
3. Mallard - 47 (29m,18f)
4. Great Blue Heron - 1
5. Wild Turkey - 3 (m)
6. Cooper's Hawk - 1 (m)
7. Red-shouldered Hawk - 2 (1 immature)
8. Red-tailed Hawk - 6 (1 immature)
9. Peregrine Falcon - 2 (1m,1f - the Ohio Turnpike bridge pair)
10. Ring-billed Gull - 98
11. Herring Gull - 15
12. Rock Pigeon - 33
13. Mourning Dove - 6
14. Belted Kingfisher - 1 (m)
15. Red-bellied Woodpecker - 6 (2m,1?,3*)
16. Downy Woodpecker - 8 (2m,2f,1?,3*)
17. Hairy Woodpecker - 5 (2f,3*)
