Emboldened by Gabe Leidy's Sunday bonanza, I visited Spitzer Marina this
morning. It's mostly iced over and the gulls were roosting in dense packs on
the ice, facing the northwest wind and presenting a sea of gray backs. I picked
out one glaucous and two lesser black-backed gulls and about 20 great
black-backed were around the edges. Couldn't winkle out any of the more exotic
specimens. Lots of mergansers in the open water of the harbor proper, plus some
coots and a single pied-billed grebe.
The US6 lift bridge is closed, they say for two days, so I didn't try to get to
the old "hot waters" area on the west bank. It's not hot anyway; the power
plant shut down some years ago and was demolished last year.
Qué será.
