I visited several sites on the western edge of Dublin yesterday looking for unusual winter birds, but basically getting little but a good morning's exercise. Despite the cold temperatures, most water was open, even many of the shallow pools at the Honda wetland. There was little around them other than Mallards and geese. Even the Corazon development lake was largely empty. Raptors were equally dull, with Red-tails being the only common species. I couldn't find harriers or Short-ears at Glacier Ridge, but admittedly wasn't there in the very early morning. As for landbirds, they weren't much better. Most notable were:

-small woodpeckers - Hairies and Downies continue their record winter, with numbers at almost every woodlot I visited
-E.Bluebirds - lots of pairs and small flocks at most parks, either migrating or nest-prospecting
-Tree Sparrows - small numbers at several areas, mostly near Glacier Ridge & Trabue Nature Reserve

Conspicuous by their absence were Horned Larks. Despite being in good habitat all morning, I didn't see or hear a single bird. Perhaps most of our winter residents have already moved north, and now we're waiting on migrants from further south.
