A nice flock of about 100 White-winged Crossbills put on a great show
today at Woodlawn. Hearing them cracking open the pine cones as they fed
was a real treat on such a beautiful Sunday morning. There was also a nice
flock of about 50 Common Redpolls that worked feverishly in a sycamore at
close range before flying over to a spruce and disappearing in the dense
branches. Eventually emerging they started the feeding frenzy again. Oak
Openings hosted a group of about 15 Pine Siskins near the nature center.
Several great looks at Red-headed Woodpeckers as well as a single Field
Sparrow just to name a few. Red-tailed Hawks seemed to be in full force
today and at one point over Oak Openings 3 were lazily flying together. It
was great to end the day with a lone Screech Owl tucked in a spruce tree.
Hope everyone got out for a bit to enjoy the February weather!
