I didn’t get out to bird until close to 4 pm on Sunday. Ended up at Red Lock
trailhead parking lot. Only two other cars there so decided not to walk,
plus it was cold. So I sat in the car and bird watched. I parked the car
facing the hillside with the road behind me. It is amazing what you see just
sitting quietly in one place.

Saw 4 cardinals, one came down to feed on the ground not more than 5 feet
from the car. It was eating from an area at the end of the plowed pavement.
The plow scraped up some of soil and left a bare patch. I thought at first
the cardinal was picking up wood chips, “chewing” on them and dropping them.
With the help of my binoculars I discovered he was picking up seeds that had
fallen from a maple tree. He would break open the seed cover, eat the seed
and drop the wing end on the ground.

There were 10 tree sparrows eating the seeds from the brown flower heads of
goldenrod, and tall grasses. 6 of the sparrows landed in the same area where
the cardinal had been. They were eating off the pavement, but couldn’t tell
what they were eating.

Also seen in the area was a song sparrow and blue bird and in a tree near
the trash bin was a Carolina wren.

I thought I heard a turkey call, but when I looked in the direction of the
sound I saw 3 deer bounding through the snow. Looking further into the woods
I saw the black shape of a coyote moving silently among the trees.

I was a very relaxing, enjoyable ˝ hour.
