Subject: Careers in community organizing for Black World Studies at Miami: please spread the word to your students

Dear Prof. Coates,

Hello, my name is Hannah Wittmer and I am the Associate Recruitment Director with the Direct Action Research Training (DART) Center. As part of an effort to introduce Miami students to careers in community organizing, I am working with the Miami University Career Center again this year to sponsor an on-campus Information Session on Wednesday, March 28 at 7pm in Psychology Building Room 127.

The Miami Career Center has been gracious about spreading word of our visit through their job database, but we are particularly interested in connecting with students from the Black World Studies program. Therefore, I am writing to request your support in letting students know of our visit.

In particular I was hoping you may help by:

* Letting me know of any students from the Black World Studies program with a particular interest in social justice, and how I may be able to contact them, so that I may personally invite them (by phone or email) to our Info Session on campus

* Forwarding along announcements of our visit to appropriate listservs, fellow faculty, interns, or to anyone you know that might be interested (see below and e-flyer attached)

Please make sure the announcement is circulated widely among graduate students and undergraduates -- both those who will graduate this year and are looking for meaningful work, and those not graduating immediately who might still be interested in learning more about the field of community organizing. I have also attached an electronic flyer to this message suitable for printing and sharing with your class. Finally, let me know if there are any specific students with a distinct interest in this area that you would suggest I contact directly.

The DART Center is a paid training program leading to placement into permanent career positions in the field. These positions are full-time, salaried and provide an excellent opportunity for students interested in improving the lives of people living in low-moderate income neighborhoods to get hands on training and experience in community organizing.

Thanks for your continued support and assistance in making this opportunity known widely among MU students.

(ANNOUNCEMENT BELOW)

Sincerely,

Hannah Wittmer

* Entering a community
* Identifying and training local leaders
* Strategic planning and issue cutting

* Direct Action on community issues
* Fundraising

The DART Center has built coalitions throughout the country that have won important victories on a broad set of justice issues including:

After successful completion of the program, DART will place graduates into permanent full-time salaried positions earning $32,500/year + benefits.
