We returned and birded the Guilford Lake Area this afternoon, Sunday, from 3PM to 5PM. Some snow with mini blizzards made for a scenic wonderland. The variety of waterfowl increased by four from yesterday, with 18 different species found around the lake today. New for the day were: American Wigeon ~ 34, Bufflehead ~ 5 pair, Ring-necked Duck ~ 4, Horned Grebe ~ 1. The following are the same species seen yesterday, with some increasing in numbers: Common Goldeneye ~ 2 males, Common Merganser ~ 5 males, Wood Duck ~ 1 pair, Northern Pintail ~ 6 pair, Northern Shoveler ~ 4 pair, Gadwall ~ 8 pair, American Black Duck ~22, Green-winged Teal ~ 34, Redhead ~ 14, Lesser Scaup ~ 16, Hooded Merganser ~ 74, Red-breasted Merganser ~ 28, Mute Swan ~ 4, Pied-billed Grebe ~ 1, Bald Eagle ~ 2 resident adults, Mallard ~ 40+, Canada Goose ~ 1 w/white neck band (black letters 2X4K), and Herring Gull ~ 15+. American Robins were everywhere today. The largest concentration of variety and numbers was around and near the island in campground bay. The Goldeneyes were easily seen from the state park campground, close to shore, on the north side of the lake. A scope is necessary to locate all the birds mentioned. I reported the neck band data from the Canada Goose. Guilford Lake State Park is in the western part of Columbiana County, about seven miles south of the city of Salem, west of Depot Road (CR410), north of SR172, and east of SR9. Roads completely circle the lake for excellent viewing access. Check out all of the lake, plus the marsh area below the east dam and causeway.
