Mary Warren brought up a good point about warblers. Up along the lake we can expect yellow-rumped, pine, and Louisiana waterthrush to show up as early as March. In April palm, black-throated green, yellow-throated, yellow, and occasionally others can show up the first half of the month. Most don't show up until late April at the earliest. Which brings up the next point. When I worked at Crane Creek i knew a lot of people that scheduled their vacation for the first week of May. They did this so they could be there before the leaves came out. Don't look now, but the leaves are coming out right now. I saw silver maple leaves along the lake shore yesterday that expanded to at least three inches long already. I also saw leaves on a number of trees including black cherry, gray birch and others. There are going to be a lot of leaves out by the first of April this year. You have a little over a month before the warblers get back. That's plenty of time to learn the calls, because its going to be tough seeing them.
