In the vicinity of Peach Mountain southeast of Peebles, there were no
Ruffed Grouse drumming, but two Winter Wrens singing, two fly-over Purple
Finch, three Louisiana Waterthush singing at three dfferent locations in
appropriate habitat and two Yellow-throated Warblers singing at two
different locations. A Ruby-crowned Kinglet was singing its spring song.
I surprised two Wild Turkeys on a logging road and at least one gobbler
gobbled repeatedly from a far ridge. Eastern Bluebirds, Field Sparrows,
Easter Towhees, Tufted Titmice, Carolina Wrens and Carolina Chickadees were
singing and setting up territories. Brown Thrashers seem to be back "in
force." Meanhile, winter residents Golden-crowned Kinglets, Dark-eyed
Juncos and Brown Creepers as well as the previously mentioned Winter Wrens
are still present. Hairy, Downy, Red-bellied and Pileated Woodpeckers and
Northern Flickers are drumming.
