Fatality due to building collisions is estimated as a leading cause of bird
deaths in North America, and nighttime lighting from buildings can lead to
higher collision rates. Ohio Bird Conservation Initiative and the Grange
Insurance Audubon Center are working with 9 other partner organizations to
reduce bird deaths due to building collisions by establishing the Lights
Out Columbus campaign. Lights Out Columbus could significantly reduce
building collision deaths by educating building owners, managers, and
residents about the risks of light emissions and window strikes to
migrating birds and enable them to reduce these risks while also decreasing
their energy expenditures.

The first objective of Lights Out Columbus is to establish a monitoring
program for nighttime light emissions and bird collisions. This monitoring
program will provide baseline data on nighttime light emissions from
buildings and the number of bird collisions occurring in Columbus during
bird migration periods. From March 15th to June 15th, volunteers for Lights
Out Columbus will be surveying a route through downtown Columbus, and we
need your help!
