This is the Ohio Rare Bird Report for March 1, 2012.

Sightings have been gleaned from the Ohio list-serve, rarebird.org,
Cincinnati Bird Sightings Log, Bobolink Area RBA (330-763-5119), Facebook,
eBird and other sources. 

Species in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS ARE REVIEW LIST SPECIES. Details of these
sightings are desired by the Ohio Bird Records Committee. Careful
observation, not ornithological expertise, is the only qualification for

Greater White-fronted Goose - The seven reported at Thomas Wetlands,
Paulding on 20 Feb remain through 28 Feb (Scott Myers). Other reports
include twenty at Miami Whitewater Wetlands, Hamilton on 25 Feb (John Hull),
twelve along the old Ottawa NWR causeway, Ottawa, which were later seen off
Anchor Point Road, Lucas the same day (Su Snyder & Sue Evanoff), one at
Wilderness Road, Wayne on 26 Feb (Randy Rowe), and fourteen at Killder
Plains, Wyandot on 25 Feb (Margaret Bowman), with three remaining through 28
Feb (Alex Hughes & Alex Champagne)

Snow Goose - Several reports including four at Wellington Reservoir, Lorain
on 24 Feb (Bonnie Law), twelve off Anchor Point Road, Lucas on 25 Feb (Su
Snyder & Sue Evanoff), one in Paulding on 27 Feb (Scott Myers), forty-eight
off Anchor Point and Decant Roads, Lucas on 28 Feb (Sherrie Duris), and
eight at Funk Bottoms, Wayne on 29 Feb (Bobolink RBA)

Brant - A report of a single individual at Castalia Pond, Erie on 28 Feb was
not relocated

Cackling Goose - Two reports; one at Fernald Nature Preserve, Hamilton on 24
Feb (Brian Wulker) and five at Funk Bottoms, Wayne on 29 Feb (Bobolink RBA)

Eurasian Wigeon - The Bobolink RBA reports that an adult male was at Funk
Bottoms, Wayne on 29 Feb which was still present on 1 Mar (Su Snyder)

White-winged Scoter - One remains at Caesar Creek, Warren as of 26 Feb (m.obs). 

Surf Scoter - Both individuals reported from Caesar Creek, Warren were still
present as of 26 Feb (m.obs). John Herman had another at Clear Fork
Reservoir, Richland on 1 Mar

Long-tailed Duck - An adult male was at Beaver Creek Reservoir, Seneca on 29
Feb (Brian McClain)

BLACK-TAILED GULL - Approaching four months, the Ashtabula bird was still
present as of 27 Feb (m.obs). For more information see

Lesser Black-backed Gull - One report; ten were off Lorain on 25 Feb (m.obs)

Glaucous Gull - John Pogacnik observed an adult off Lake during a lakeshore
waterbird survey on 25 Feb and several birders had another off Lorain the
same day

Snowy Owl - Four reports; the bird at Cleveland-Hopkins Airport, Cuyahoga
was still present on 24 Feb (Irene Krise), one was found west of Metzger
Marsh, Lucas on 25 Feb (Dave Smittee & Patti Fey), which was still present
the next day (m.obs), one of the Ashtabula birds remains through 26 Feb
(Marcia Brehmer), and one was reported in Wood on 1 Mar (BGSU Ornithology Class)

Long-eared Owl - The only report comes from Seneca for this week

COMMON RAVEN - One continues in Knox as of 29 Feb (Margaret Bowman)

Northern Shrike – Sightings from this week came from Geauga, Lucas, Ottawa,
Stark, and Wayne

HARRIS'S SPARROW - The individual at Joseph Miller’s farm northeast of
Winesburg in Holmes was still present as of 1 Mar (Bobolink RBA). For more
info, call the hotline at (330-763-5119). Birders welcome, excluding Sundays.

Dickcissel - The one visiting a feeder in Holmes was still present through
the week (Bobolink RBA)

Baltimore Oriole - An early individual has visiting a feeder south of Mount
Eaton, Wayne/Holmes through the week (Bobolink RBA)

White-winged Crossbill - The flock at Woodlawn Cemetery, Lucas continues to
decline with only ten present through the week with the last report on 26
Feb (m.obs). Brad Sparks observed another eight at Oak Hill Cemetery,
Wyandot on 25 Feb

Common Redpoll - New reports comprise of a small flock on South Bass Island,
Ottawa on 28 Feb (Kit Knaser, fide Lisa Brohl) and one reaching southern
Ohio in Washington on 27 Feb (Julie Zickafoose). Continuing birds include
two in Hancock through 27 Feb (Debbie Kaylor), one in Allen through 28 Feb
(Russell Reynolds) and the female in Ottawa through 1 Mar (Ethan Kistler)
